300TDi transplant

Well, after languishing on my trailer for a few months, I decided it was time to start stripping a Disco 300TDi.

The engine will be put into my 1972 Carawagon project, along with an LT77 Defender gearbox - it's a 6 pot chassis so it should fit ok with a few mount and propshaft mods.
Alex has done the same transplant (or was it a 200TDi?) in his latest Dormobile so I'm hoping he'll be available for tips

Here's the engine & box removed from the Disco (this box will be sold on):

and the engine on a stand, waiting for a clean:

More later as it progresses

Cheers,
Robin.

Should make for a nice conversion Robin....
plans for my SW include a Tdi and LT77 ....though I'll be staying permanent four wheel drive as nature intended ...
Just to see IF the sky falls down and the world ceases to rotate with the standard front axle rather than a stage 1 item  ,
(Tracey's 88" is TDi and LT77 permanent four wheel drive without ANY problems despite the doom sayers AND "A man in a pub said " types )
IMHO the LT77 in permanent four wheel drive form makes for a much more "stable through the corners especially in the wet or icey conditions" and less likely to get into trouble reaching for the red lever off road .

Jonny Reas has got an LT77 mated to a Tdi in his truckcab - it sits about 3 inches further back in the cab and only required minor surgery to the gearbox tunnel he told me. Waydago!

This is how the LT77 long stick/short bell housing Defender box sits in tracey's 88 SII

Bit of a trim and amalgamation of tunnel bits BUT looks nice and neat with the rubber gaitor on it .

I'm following this thread closely as I too have ambitious plans to tranplant a 300tdi with lt77 box in Dora the Dormobile. She is also a sixpot.
Not sure yet which way to go with the transfer box though. 2 or 4 wheel drive.
Does this conversion need a removable gearbox crossmember?
