Ebay Dormobile project!

Post by RMS » Sun Jul 07, 2013 10:36 am

Just what some of you have been waiting for, a 1970 Dormobile project

HERE

I'd love to take this on myself, but just got too much on with the two Carawagon projects :stars:

Oh, and the seller has included the word "Rare" in the title, so expect it to go for a fair bit

Good luck

Cheers,
Robin.

I know the seller well and he is sound. This is a 1969 manufactured vehicle (70 plate). It is a great little project vehicle and mostly complete. A real opportunity for someone, they aren't cheap anymore but it was on with no reserve so he is letting the market decide.

I'm almost tempted myself Dan, just to add a bit of variety in to the front garden  but realistically, it would just sit there for a year or two until I could get around to it, so better to let someone else have a chance to restore it

Wouldn't that upset the balance of your pretend Moroccan encampment theme, or are you going planning to go more free form next year :neener: You stick to wood and Formica...lol... Seriously though, plenty of folk say they are looking, here is a great opportunity!

Don't forget we were 3 Carawagons and one Dormobile on our Morocco trip, so in fact, it would redress the balance :neener:

Had a look at this on ebay and it is definitely a pre/early 68 vehicle. If it was 69 it would have lights in the wings, it would be fitted with a servo, would be with the later 2a vent flaps and the demister vents would be plastic, not metal. Also if it was converted in in 1969 or 1970 it would have different build badge and the seats would be black vinyl, not elephant hide.

Cannot read the build number on my notebook. Anyone checked it?

Build number has a 9.... This is what I was going on Mick. I know some history of this, but only the last few years.

40603.9.526

It is lights in grille, the older front panel looks like a later addition. It has a later black dash, single wiper, later steering wheel. The six pot has been swapped for a Perkins, so maybe the servo was ditched? I agree the interior is earlier, but you never know, Martin Walters may have put this in or it is the interior of another as the po owned/owns more than 1...

HI Dan
It has a later black dash, single wiper, later steering wheel.
. All 6 pots had those from the start of the production run. As for the servo being removed, I doubt that would happen as the Perkins has a mechanical vacuum pump. As I said above, this is definitely a very early 6 pot or a converted 4 pot. Very few 6 pot SW had lights in the panel and deep sills.

Talking of the Perkins. The 6 pot Dormobile was the top of the Land Rover range and as an Approved Conversion was only sold through Rover Dealers. It was very expensive and was bought by wealthy folk who wanted to travel at speed to their holiday. If you look at the price list, the 6 pot was quite a bit more then the 4 pot. The idea of the engine being changed from new is fantasy.

I'm not saying it's a ringer. It has the correct Maidstone registration, so has no doubt been through the Dormobile factory. All I am saying is it is earlier then he thinks. Being a one of the first 6 pots, it may have not sold for ages, as it was the 'old model' by the time it hit the show room? Being sat in the showroom with the new lights in wing models, with servo brakes, etc. The more I think about it, I bet that is exactly what happened.

Cheers Mick

Interesting Mick, when he gets the paperwork I will ask him. So the What about the 9 in the Dormi plate? I would agree that there isn't much chance of the Perkins being factory fitted btw , I think it is just coincidence the last one had the same. The likelihood is that this will end up in mainland Europe like the last two that have come up for restoration. I would think if it does, the history may be lost. The landypoint one looked great but was rebuilt on another vehicle instead of being restored.
